Web Services have gained prominence in recent years due to the increasing interest in requirements such as interoperability and software integration. The W3C defines a Web service as a software system designed to support interoperable machine to machine interaction over a network.

This session of the seminar will be centered in Web Services and our main goal is to shed more on this topic for those of you who know the concepts but have never put them into practice. We present the technologies that enable the development and usage of Web services, including their description and invocation, as well as the discovery of particular functionalities inside the Web services network.

Furthermore, we present a complete example of porting a desktop application into a web service architecture with the help of some technologies that make this process somewhat less painful. We discuss common issues related with migration and draw some conclusions.
