About the Department

The Department of Service and Information System Engineering (ESSI) is an interdisciplinary unit that focuses on the common ground between service science, management and engineering (SSME) and information systems and technology.

The Department was created on 26 November 2009 and is currently one of the two youngest departments at the UPC. It was formed from the information systems group at our university to coordinate the teaching, research and technology transfer activities that would enable the University to integrate SSME into its existing work in the area of information systems.

The Department currently has 30 lecturers and 10 grantholders and is supported by the administration and IT staff of the LSI-ESSI Management Unit.

The Department is involved in teaching the pre-EHEA degree in Informatics Engineering and the bachelor’s degree in Informatics Engineering, coordinated by the Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB). It is also responsible for teaching some of the subjects for the master’s degree in Information Technology, coordinated by the FIB, and the master’s and doctoral degrees in Computing, coordinated by the Department of Software.

The Department’s main research lines are those covered by the Software and Service Engineering Group (GESSI) and the Information Modelling and Processing (MPI) group.

SSME is an emerging discipline closely linked to the field of information systems, and the relationship between them offers a range of research and teaching possibilities which have yet to be fully explored. The Department organises a seminar programme to promote the analysis and discussion of scientific, technical, educational and social issues related to these areas.
