The Department

The department of Service and Information System Enginnering (ESSI) is interdisciplinary, bringing together the discipline of service science, management and engineering (SSME) and the computer disciplines of information systems and information technology. The department emphasizes the part that is common to these disciplines.

The department was created on November 26, 2009 and is currently one of the two youngest departments in our university. The department was formed from the information systems group of the UPC, to coordinate the teaching, research and technology transfer activities necessary to incorporate the SSME into the UPC.

It is currently has around 40 teachers and around 10 grantholders, and is supported by the administrative staff and IT staff of the Unitat Transversal de Gestió de l'Àmbit TIC Campus Nord.

Currently the department participates in the teaching the bachelor’s degrees in Informatics Engineering (GEI), Data Science and Engineering (GCED) and Artificial Intelligence (GIA) coordinated by the Facultat d'Informàtica de Barcelona (FIB), and Informatics Engineering coordinated by the Escola Politècnica Superior d'Enginyeria de Vilanova i la Geltrú (EPSEVG). It also participates in the teaching of the master's degrees in Informatics Engineering (MEI) and Data Science (MDS) coordinated by the FIB, as well as in the doctoral program in Computer Science of the Computer Science department.

The department's current research areas are the ones of the two research groups called inSSIDE (Integrated Software, Service, Information and Data Engineering) and MPI (Information Modeling and Processing), and to the EDUSteam-ESSI research subgroup (STEAM University Learning Research Group)
